wygłosi referat pt.

Socrates and the Arginusae Affair.

Streszczenie:

Socratic literature includes conflicting references to the role of Socrates during the trial of the generals for the sea-battle of Arginusae: in Plato’s Apology and Xenophon’s Hellenica he is presented as the only πρύτανις that opposed the will of the crowd to judge the generals on a single vote. In the Gorgias and Xenophon’s Memorabilia he is elevated to the status of chairman (ἐπιστάτης τῶν πρυτάνεων). This paper explores the possible interconnections among the references and discusses Diodorus Siculus’ narrative of the same events. The conclusions are reached that Socrates cannot have served as chairman and that the performance of his civic duties may not have been as significant as our sources make it appear.
